A Crowd-Sourced Vegan Response to Lierre Keith

The Vegetarian Myth is a book written by anti-civilization activist Lierre Keith and published by PM Press in 2009. After 20 years of veganism, she decided that her many serious health problems were caused by her diet. She believes that a truly sustainable human society can only be attained by destroying modern technological infrastructure, decreasing the human population, and returning to hunting and gathering. Throughout the book she makes many bold claims about the healthfulness, ethics and environmental sustainability of veganism which have led some people to question the value of living without animal products.

The sections of the book about the destructive nature of industrial agriculture and monocrops are valid, yet most of the conclusions drawn are irrational and misleading. This website takes a critical eye to Lierre Keith's arguments and lays bare the many logical fallacies, inaccuracies and distortions that comprise The Vegetarian Myth. In countering Keith's claims, we defend the ethical importance of animal rights, the ecological benefits and sustainability of stock-free organic farming and permaculture, and the healthfulness of a vegan diet.

Although this website may be critical by nature, the goal of this project is to craft a well-researched and accurate response to The Vegetarian Myth. Submissions will be carefully moderated; we will not accept submissions that distort the facts in either direction and all facts and claims must cite an unbiased source or acknowledge the bias of the source.

This project came about not out of animosity toward Lierre Keith, but to set the record straight in the most direct, thorough and emotionally-neutral methods possible. We hope the information available here helps you to make an informed choice about your diet. VegetarianMyth.com is entirely volunteer-run and is not affiliated with any organization.
